Amalgamated by Tuomas Markunpoika

I saw this on dezeen the other day and I just had to share it.

Tuomas Markunpoika has made vases by gluing pencils together into blocks and then turning the blocks on a lathe to create the vase shape.

This video explains it slightly better than I do though:

Pretty amazing eh?

I particularly like it when you can really see the pencil detail.

And it’s a collaboration with good ol’ Faber Castell.

As it says on Tuomas’s website:
““Amalgamated” is a collection which explores the relationship of a mass produced ‘tool’ and its individual purpose. The beauty of the pencil as an object seems to go unnoticed if utilised only for their primary purpose. “Amalgamated” is a visual and tactile investigation by using pencils as a raw material. This holistic principle has been the fundament for creating this set of vases; let the pencils become a thing themselves.”

So there you go.
